MANILA, Philippines — Alex Eala’s run in the US Open 2025 ended in the second round after getting swept by Cristina Bucsa of Spain, 6-4, 6-3, early Thursday (Philippine time) at Court 7 of the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in New York.
The more experienced player prevailed as the 27-year-old Spanish, who is playing her fifth US Open despite being 20 ranks down at No. 95 against her younger opponent, sent Eala crashing out of the Grand Slam tournament following the latter’s breakthrough win two days ago.

Tied at 3-3 in the second set, Bucsa, a more successful women’s doubles player with seven titles and a Paris Olympics 2024 bronze medal, won three consecutive games to advance to the third round—the furthest she has reached in the US Open, matching her finish at Wimbledon this year.
The 20-year-old Eala tried her best to extend the game by saving a breakpoint in the ninth game, but two consecutive errors allowed Bucsa to complete a sweep in one hour and 22 minutes.

The Filipino tennis sensation, who led 2-1 to start the second set, also dropped a 4-3 advantage in Set 1 as Bucsa won three consecutive games, saving three breakpoints and forcing two straight errors from Eala to complete the comeback.

It was a rough night for Eala, who committed 21 unforced errors against Bucsa, who only had 12.
The US Open is Eala’s third and final Grand Slam main draw appearance this year. She made history as the first Filipino to win a match at a Grand Slam singles tournament in the Open era after surviving World No. 14 Clara Tauson of Denmark, 6-3, 2-6, 7-6 (13-11), on Monday.
Eala, the 2022 US Open girls singles champion, is expected to rise from her current World ranking of No. 75 after her US Open campaign.
