Alabama Sports Hall of Fame honors SEC’s Mark Womack

BIRMINGHAM, Alabama (February 10, 2023)- Mark Womack, Executive Associate Commissioner for the Southeastern Conference, has been named a 2023 Distinguished American Sportsman by the State of Alabama Sports Hall of Fame, recently announced by ASHOF.

Womack has spent more than four decades as an SEC staff member, including the last 32 years as Executive Associate Commissioner. Womack serves as Chief Financial Officer, liaison to the SEC’s athletic director, and he spearheads scheduling efforts for the sport of football. He also works closely with SEC football bowl partners and television partners to perform general administrative duties of SEC football and the SEC office.

He has seen the SEC’s footprint grow from seven states when he joined the Conference office in 1978 to 11 states today. The SEC expanded from 10 members to 12 in 1991, and then again from 12 to 14 in 2012. The SEC will grow to 16 members when Texas and Oklahoma join the SEC in 2025.

In working with the sport of football, the SEC has experienced unparalleled success. SEC teams have won 13 of the last 17 national championships and finished sixth. Since 2006, the SEC has had more wins and appearances than any other conference.

Womack has served as acting commissioner twice, first in 1986 before the SEC hired Harvey Schiller, then again in 1989 before Roy Kramer was named commissioner. He has worked with five of the SEC’s eight commissioners. Womack joined the SEC in 1978 as Assistant Director of Public Relations under SEC publicist Scoop Hudgins. The following year, he became the Assistant Commissioner for Administration and Information. In 1981, Womack was promoted to Assistant Commissioner, a title he held until 1988 when he was promoted again to Associate Commissioner.

Born in Scottsboro, Ala., and raised in Tuscaloosa, Womack earned a bachelor’s degree in Public Relations from the University of Alabama in 1978.

Womack is the third representative from SEC Headquarters to receive this award, joining Roy Kramer (2003) and the late Mike Slive (2015). Other previous winners include Bob Hope (1988) and former President George HW Bush (1992). The 55th Annual Induction Banquet and Ceremony will be held in the Birmingham Ballroom, at the Sheraton Birmingham Hotel, on Saturday, May 13, 2023.
