Dindin Santiago-Manabat knows that Akari will win.
This is not because the Chargers are facing an Army-Black Mamba squad that is struggling to win the Premier Volleyball League (PVL).
“We’ve felt it [we would win] because in every game, we keep telling you that we won one set, [we] will remain [the momentum] going,” said Manabat.
Indeed, Akari defeated Army-Black Mamba, 25-18, 25-19, 23-25, 25-19, in the All-Filipino Conference at the PhilSports Arena on Tuesday, with Manabat leading the way with 23 points. .
“We know, as a team, we will wake up when we get a set and [momentum] keep going,” Manabat said after the Chargers finally got into the win column.
“Well, congratulations to my players for our first win. We keep trying every day to really train and I’m happy with them and I’m very grateful that we performed well,” said head coach Akari Jorge Souza de Brito.
Army fell to 0-3 for the tournament and has now lost 16 straight games since last year’s Conference Invitational.
The Chargers actually had a chance to sweep the Lady Troopers, but Jane Gonzales broke the deadlock at 23 to put Army at set point before an error by Akari’s Erika Raagas extended the match to a fourth set.
Akari led by just one point, 18-17, late in the fourth set before scoring seven of the next nine points to seal the victory and end their conference slump.
“We always try our best and I’m sure we can bring another surprise like last year,” added De Brito.
