After taking out the Volkswagen Polo’s brake discs, engine block and shock absorbers, armored vehicle manufacturer SVI Engineering has taken another shot – this time at the hatchback’s cylinder head.

The fourth episode in the company Shoot Through series, the exercise is familiar and involves the aluminum head that fires in by the AK47 taken at 30 000 frames per second on the Photron Fastcam SA4 high-speed camera.
A with each episode in the series so far, round one measures 7.62 mm x 39 mm and while managing to leave more than a mark on the shock absorber before being tested, the performance against the cylinder head is not as impressive.
As shown in the footage, round one failed to penetrate the entire head, with damage only to the water jacket under the hood.

No need for different angles
According to SVI CEO Jaco de Kock, a secondary shot at a different angle will make a small impact on a bullet that passes through the head completely.
“There are many layers with the water jacket and various other components inside. Obviously, the valve is very difficult and in my opinion, you are quite safe [hiding] behind the cylinder head”.
“After the engine block, it’s 1-0. With the cylinder head, it’s 2-0 for the engine. So if someone says you’re safe behind the engine block, you might as well say you’ll also be safe behind the cylinder head,” he added. SVI Engineering Business Development Director, Nicol Louw.
AK47: 1, components: 3
Of the four items tested today, the first is a brake disc from a 70-series Toyota Land Cruiser, the only shock absorber that failed to withstand the impact of a clean AK47 without issue.
