Agenda 111 is in its 4th year, but not a single hospital has been completed – Mahama

Former President John Dramani has criticized the Akufo-Addo administration for not completing a single hospital in the Agenda 111 project years after the promise was made.

Mr. Mahama pointed out that the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) must learn to take Ghanaians seriously and live up to the promises it made.

In a tweet on January 14, the Presidential Candidate for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the 202nd general election said “The promise of the ‘Agenda 111’ hospital is in its 4th year, but not a single hospital has been completed to support the quality of health care delivery. .

“This is contrary to the lofty promises made in 2020. The NPP must learn to take Ghanaians seriously. Enough slogans!”

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, Tuesday 17 August 2021, commissioned the Agenda 111 project which will ensure the construction of 111 hospitals across the country.

During the commissioning of the project in Trede in the Ashanti Region, the President said the project will provide 20,000 jobs for health professionals upon completion.

He said the Ministry of Health will hire more doctors, nurses and pharmacists when the project is completed.

He also said that more indirect jobs will also be created by the implementation of the project.

The President further pointed out that the Covid-19 pandemic has affected investment in Ghana’s health sector.

To that end, he said his government is increasing investment in the health sector of the economy.

He said, “I am glad that the biggest investment in the country’s health care is being made. We have met this morning because of the devastation of the Covid 19 that affects every country on the planet. For us in Ghana, not only is the pandemic disrupting our daily lives, but it also shows the lack of in the health care system due to years of underinvestment and neglect.

Health Minister Kwaku Agyeman-Manu said during the event that the best way for government to improve health delivery is to provide infrastructure.

To that end, he said the government is committed to providing the necessary health infrastructure.

He said, “As you know, a healthy person ensures a healthy country and the government that remembers this fact has proven to the public its commitment to improve the health status of all citizens in the country.

“The best way to improve health is by providing new infrastructure or improving existing ones across the country.”

Mr. Agyeman-Manu further disclosed that land litigation in Accra and Kumasi is affecting the project.

However, he said the government has been working hard to ensure that these challenges are addressed so that the project can move forward smoothly.

“It is too early for me to predict whether we will finish or not. But optimistically, this is what we want to do and we are trying to push ourselves.

“We still have challenges with land especially in big cities like Accra and Kumasi. Now we are changing the design of the infrastructure so that it does not spread over the larger area that we want to go up. So they are designing.

“Even in the community, in the district, some leaders are coming and there is litigation in some areas,” said Member of Parliament Dormaa Center while delivering some medical supplies from the Italian government on Thursday 5 May.
