What has been rocking American politics for a week is still not over and that is the election of the Speaker of the House of Representatives.
As we know, Republicans won the midterm elections for the House of Representatives, but a significant minority of Representatives refused to support Kevin McCarthy for the role of Speaker. Without one it is very difficult for the House to function.
There have been eight official votes and so far none have yielded results. Having a majority is not enough and the winner must be supported by more than 50% of all representatives.
I guess this can cause long-term damage to the Republicans and even a call by Donald Trump for a stalemate to end the situation has not been resolved.
The one thing that is certain is that the reputation of the Republicans cannot be helped by what is happening. The failure to elect a Speaker has several constitutional implications that will affect a large part of the government.
