Adeleke proscribes NURTW, other road transport unions in Osun

Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke has proscribed it National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) and other transport unions operating in motor parks in the country.

Olawale Rasheed, the governor’s spokesman, disclosed this in a statement on Monday.

He said the union ban was to address security challenges, eliminate illegal destruction of public property and unlawful killings when rival union groups attacked each other.

The crisis started among transport union members when a faction threatened to wrest control of the motor park from union officials and NURTW members.

The faction alleged that NURTW officials were working against Mr. Adeleke in the July governorship election.

There have been several clashes between transport union workers resulting in damage to public property and many injured.

Police in the country said they have arrested several suspects linked to the crisis and ammunition has been recovered from them.

But the state government banned all transport unions in the country and announced that motor parks would be managed by a new transport management system.

The governor’s spokesperson explained that the new transportation management system will also provide employment for citizens and increase the state’s internal revenue.

He also explained that the new transport management system will control “vehicle and cycle” parks across the country.

Mr. Rasheed also announced that the new transport management will have a disciplinary committee consisting of eleven team members.

“The Disciplinary Committee will swear in Comrade Wakeel Nurudeen Oluronbi for the Transport System Vehicle sector and Comrade Oyeniyi Sikiru Ayobami to lead the Cycle sector,” he said.

“It is a one-ticketing system approach across the country and will create thousands of temporary jobs in Osun State. The new policy will boost our revenue generating capacity and help improve our economy,” he added.

“In addition, this new system will eliminate the insecurity, damage to property and killings experienced by commuters when rival trade union groups attack each other. Moving forward, no one will be caught fighting or causing unrest in our parks or roads,” he warned.

“Elchanan Projects and Concepts Limited is the consultant that will oversee the overall implementation of the transport sector reform.”
