Abu Dhabi: Developing Africa’s green manufacturing capabilities is a key strategy to boost growth – Minister of Energy

Minister of Energy, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh called for the development of Africa’s green manufacturing capabilities which according to him is one of the key strategies to boost growth, generate decent job opportunities, and create sustainable wealth that will ensure Africa is not left behind. in the development of the global green economy.

Dr. Prempeh made the statement while addressing the Launch of Africa’s Renewable Energy Manufacturing Opportunities and Progress on the sidelines of Abu Dhabi’s Sustainability week as a keynote speaker on Tuesday, 17Th January at the Abu Dhabi Exhibition Centre

Dubbed “Green Manufacturing in Africa through South-South Cooperation” is an event organized by Sustainable Energy For All to discuss the levers that will enable manufacturing of Green and Renewable Energy Technologies in Africa and strategic partnerships to accelerate efforts for south-south cooperation.

According to Dr. Historically, the manufacturing sector has helped drive rapid economic growth and global change, however, Sub-Saharan Africa has yet to realize the transformative impact of industrialization. Manufacturing’s contribution to the continent’s GDP, he said, has not experienced significant or stable growth over the past four decades.

“Dependence on the export of raw materials and imported consumer goods supports the economic model used on the Continent, which is a major setback for sustainable development,” he said.

The Minister who is also a Member of Parliament for Manhyia South said the global energy transition agenda should give Africa the opportunity to take concrete and decisive action to redefine our economic model. “This model must be driven by added value and an export-led growth strategy, through green manufacturing that will create the necessary jobs, infrastructure development, increasing export revenues and prosperity,” he said.

He continued “The African continent is endowed with critical metals such as Lithium, Cobalt, Tantalite which are important for manufacturing clean energy technologies such as Lithium-ion batteries for the power and e-mobility sectors,” said Dr. Prempeh. .

As Africa takes steps to change the continent’s economic base, it must not forget the challenges and bottlenecks of limited technological capacity, inadequate human capital, high input costs, high energy deficits, low productivity and weak capital markets. The attraction of green industry to Africa in his view will allow the continent to leapfrog in the energy transition agenda.

The minister said that Ghana has just launched the US$562.00 billion energy transition framework at the recently concluded COP 27 in Egypt to provide an optimal and sustainable pathway for fuel supply security, a diversified energy mix and cost-effective power generation in the medium term until long. average electricity generation rate of US$4.5sen/kwh to accelerate Ghana’s socio-economic development and therefore remain committed in this direction.

“There is a better situation on the Continent, including political stability, market and geographical advantage. Therefore, I call on you ministers and stakeholders who have gathered here to create bold and implementable economic models and solutions that will enable us to realize our aspirations African green manufacturing”
