As one of the most successful investors of all time, many people draw inspiration from Warren Buffett. Different investors have their own circumstances, but I pay attention to what Buffett does. Fortunately, they are consistent and open about their investment strategies. This means that I can understand, in general terms, how Buffett will invest this year.

Here are four ways I think Buffett will approach the market in 2023. Decisions that may also change my own investment choices.

Avoid timing the market

Buffett’s largest stock holdings in 2023, ie Apple. But in the past year, Apple’s stock has lost 28% of its value.

If Buffett is such a great investor, why didn’t he sell a year ago? Is it because they avoid timing the market? In fact, they see short-term price movements as distractions. They try to focus on the fundamental investment case for a particular segment. They have been doing this for decades. I expect to remain central to the approach in 2023.

Exploitation of chaotic markets

Just because Buffett doesn’t try to time the market, doesn’t mean he pays attention to it. After all, falling stock prices may allow them to acquire shares in companies they like – at a more attractive price.

Buffett is known as “afraid that others are greedy and greedy when others are afraid“. A couple of years ago we saw a lot of greed in the market. That is now causing fear in some sectors, raising the prospect of a stock market crash at some point this year, or beyond.

I expect Buffett to keep an eye on any situation in 2023 where a good quality company sees its stock price marked down to bargain levels because of fear in the market.

That approach is how he invests American Express in the 1960s – and continues to work for people today.

Diversification never gets old

One thing you can trust about Buffett’s portfolio in 2023 is that it will remain diversified. I will follow the same approach.

As a seasoned investor, Buffett knows that people can have too many good things. So, whatever he buys or sells in 2023, I expect him to maintain a diversified portfolio across several stocks.

Stick to knitting

Will Buffett invest in space exploration company SpaceX, a hydrogen energy company ITM poweror e-commerce group THG in 2023?

I can’t be 100% sure of the answer, but I’m pretty sure it’s not. Buffett usually likes to stick with profitable companies with proven business models. They don’t always do it, as seen in the stock holdings Tesla competition BYD.

The main reason I expect Buffett will not invest money in these companies above this year, because they operate outside the circle of competence. That makes it difficult – if not impossible – for them to establish an investment case.

Buffett has become incredibly rich by investing again and again in some areas that he understands well, such as financial services, insurance, consumer goods and logistics. I expect them to do the same in 2023.
