7 people killed in related shootings south of San Francisco

Seven people were killed in two related shootings at a mushroom farm and a trucking company in the south shore community of San Francisco, and a suspect is in custody, officials said.

San Mateo County Board of Supervisors President Dave Pine said four people died at a farm and three at a trucking business on the outskirts of Half Moon Bay, a city about 48 kilometers south of San Francisco.

Police have arrested Zhao Chunli, 67, in connection with the shooting, Pine said.

It wasn’t immediately clear how the locations were connected, though Pine said the suspect worked at one of the businesses. He called the suspect a “disgruntled worker.”

California Sen. Josh Becker, who represents the area, said the men were killed in separate shootings. San Mateo County Supervisor David Canepa tweeted that there was a shooting at a mushroom farm.

‘There is no ongoing threat’ to the community, the sheriff said

The San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office tweeted just before 5 p.m. local time that the suspect was in custody.

“There is no threat to the public at this time,” the sheriff’s office said.

Television footage from the area showed officers arresting the man without incident.

Aerial television images also showed police officers gathering evidence from a farm with dozens of greenhouses.

The shooting followed the killing of 11 people at a Southern California ballroom on Saturday evening.

“We are sickened by today’s tragedy in Half Moon Bay,” Pine said in a statement.

“We don’t even have time to grieve for those lost in the terrible shooting in Monterey Park. Gun violence must stop.”

California Governor Gavin Newsom tweeted that he was “in a hospital meeting with victims of a mass shooting when I asked to be pulled away to be briefed about another shooting. This time in Half Moon Bay. Tragedy upon tragedy.”
