62-year-old man granted bail after his two pitbulls maul woman to death

A man whose two dogs mauled a 43-year-old woman to death has been granted bail of R5 000.

Nchabeleng Charles Masebe, charged with culpable homicide, appeared in the Senwabarwana Magistrate’s Court in Limpopo on Thursday.

The 62-year-old was arrested and charged after the dogs killed Melitta Sekole on December 23.

The schoolgirl was walking to her workplace when she was attacked by two dogs, believed to be pit bulls, in Vivo from Blouberg Local Municipality.

The woman was later transferred to a provincial hospital in Polokwane where she succumbed to her injuries on December 27.

Warranty terms

Masebe’s bail conditions every Friday must report to Mara Police Station and hand over travel documents, SowetanLIVE has been reported.

State prosecutor Karabo Tefo also confirmed that Masebe’s dogs would be killed.

Defense lawyer Masebe Mando Matshisevhe wrote a letter to the SPCA in Louis Trichardt giving permission for the dog to be killed.

Matshisevhe confirmed this, adding that his client would comply with the bail conditions.

“I have drawn up a letter to authorize the SPCA to put the dog down,” Matshisevhe said.

‘Will not bring my sister back’

The deceased’s younger brother, Thuso Phala, said the family was unhappy that Masebe had been released.

“It’s very sad because we lost our parents and sister,” Thuso said.

“We know that there is nothing we can do to bring him back, even if he is put in jail, it will not bring his sister back. But at least it will wipe away our tears,” he said.

The case was adjourned to April 26, 2023.
