From athlete to actor! Paul Mescal get a big break in the series Normal People and his career only got bigger.
Before pursuing acting, the Irish native played Gaelic football in the under-21 football league. However, Mescal decided to give up the sport after suffering a jaw injury and began to focus on his love of theater.
Mescal attended The Lir Academy at Trinity College in Dublin where he earned a degree in acting in 2017. After graduating, he landed roles in local productions. The Great Gatsby and Red Shoes. In 2018, the stage actor went to London to participate The Plow and the Star.
In 2020, Mescal got his big break while playing together Daisy Edgar-Jones at Normal People. The miniseries – which is based on Sally RooneyThe 2018 book of the same name – originally aired on BBC Three in the UK in April 2020 before being released on Hulu later that month. For his first TV gig, he played Connell Waldron, a high school student who falls in love with his wealthy but unpopular classmate Marianne Sheridan, portrayed by Edgar-Jones.
“We hold characters in fiction to a higher standard than our peers know,” Mescal told IndieWire in August when discussing the event. “Connell is a very frustrating character on the page and on screen. For that reason, he’s a great character to play. He’s complex. Neither the book nor the series explains why he struggles with emotional intimacy. He’s predisposed to a position of social power; he is academically bright; he is sporty. How does this feel about Marianne? As a result, he cannot recognize or quantify the feelings he feels. This causes him to be indecisive, or a coward from some perspectives.
Mescal received critical acclaim for his role in the drama and earned an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited Series or Movie in 2020. However, Mark Ruffalo finally brought home the trophy.
After his TV debut, Mescal continued to play in several film projects including Princess disappeared, God’s creature and Carmen. The main role in the picture 2022 After sunset he earned his first Oscar nomination for Best Actor.
