About 30 percent of Ghanaians are classified as migrants according to the 2021 Population and Housing Census (PHC) Thematic Report on Migration.
The report, which was released by the Ghana Statistical Service (GSS) explained that the figure represents people whose place of birth is different from the place of enumeration; shows that Ghanaians are mobile.
It also stated that the main reason for migration is to settle permanently because 36 percent of migrants move to a long-term or permanent residence.
“Greater Accra led the region that gained population through migration, followed by the Ashanti region while on the other hand, among the 10 regions that lost population due to migration, the Volta region was the highest,” the report said.
Furthermore, the report revealed that the main destinations for people migrating from Ghana to live outside the country are Europe and America.
The report also shows gender differences in the main causes of migration as female migrants generally migrate for marriage and family reunification, while males migrate for economic reasons.
The Ghana Statistical Service (GSS) in collaboration with the International Organization for Migration (IOM) released the report on March 9, 2023.
Government Statistics, Prof. Samuel Kobina Annim, noted that Ghana these days cannot do a survey only on migration. He added that it is important that the survey be conducted in collaboration with the Ghana Immigration Service and the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture, to address issues related to travel and tourism.
The Head of Mission for Ghana, Togo, and Benin, Fatou Ndiaye Diallo, stated that Ghana needs up-to-date migration data to facilitate evidence-based reporting and policy making as a country of origin, transit and destination.
“While this has been identified as a key need by the Government of Ghana through the National Migration Policy, the achievement of these goals has been a challenge,” he said.
He thus commended the Statistical Service for producing the report which he said “provides much needed data to interrogate the migration situation in Ghana to inform the right policy techniques.
“In addition, the data will support the review of Ghana’s migration profile,” he added.
Director General, Ministry of Home Affairs, Adelaide Anno-Kumi,. highlights the importance of the report saying, “the data provide a basis for planning, implementation, monitoring and evaluating the needs of the population in the context of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 10.7”.
He called on stakeholders to support the GSS with effective dissemination of 2021PHC data for national development.
