In his first attempt, who was also his first opponent, who succeeded his late husband in the contest, Mr. Dumelo lost after getting 37,478 votes representing 48.3% against Mrs. Alhassan’s 39,851 votes, equal to 51.4%.
The results appear to favor John Dumelo despite his defeat as he secured 8.7 percent of the votes for the NDC while the NPP lost 5.9 percent of the votes from its previous performance.
This gave Mr. Dumelo confidence as he claimed that the coming election is the time to wrest the NDC’s second seat in history since Rebecca Akweley Adotey’s victory in 1996.
Speaking to his Twitter page, John Dumelo thanked his teammates for the kind gesture.
“I am humbled to receive the leadership of 23 women who donated a total of 1,850gh to my campaign. The women (who are friends) are students from Legon, Knustford and UPSA. I am very grateful. Let’s make Awayaso West great again! #2ndcoming# JD2024” he wrote.
Meanwhile, tension has been brewing between the two candidates running for Ayawaso West office Wuogon Fred Nuamah and John Dumelo who have accused each other of betrayal ahead of the upcoming NDC elections.
