Police have arrested about 18 University of Ghana students, believed to be former occupants of the Commonwealth Hall, over the disturbance.
According to a police statement, 18 suspects, along with about 200 others, joined armed officers to prevent them from entering the room.
“All 18 suspects are in police custody and will be brought to court for trial. Security on the campus has been intensified for academic activities to continue without hindrance,” the statement said.
“We want to assure you that all others involved in the disturbance will be arrested and prosecuted,” the police said.
In another related development, the Tesano Divisional Police Command has arrested about 44 suspected criminals from various ‘ghetto’ hideouts in Accra.
These areas include Abeka Free Pipe, Fadama, Santana Market, Lapaz, and Seven Days Ofankor. The operation was carried out by Assistant Commissioner of Police ACP Martin Oduro Appiah and six other officers and 19 people.
The police, at the end of the exercise, took away one unregistered motorcycle, scissors, an unspecified number of lighters, and some dried leaves suspected to be marijuana.
The 44 suspects include Osman Sharabutu, aged 21; Kofi George, age 22; Augustine Obeng, age 20; Abubakari Sumaila; Ronald Otobre, age 19; Samuel Lartey, age 25; and Prince Amoako, age 19; Michael Odame, age 17; Dennis Johnson, age 18; Simon Osei Owusu, aged 23; Jaminu Adamu, age 23; Jattey Awattey, aged 34; Eric Asante, age 25; Bismark Nkrumah, 23 years old.
Issah Ibrahim, age 22; Francis Agura, age 44; Annie Moses, age 37; Savage Osei, aged 23; Gideon Ayeko, aged 25; William Acquah, age 30; Fred Sarpong, age 25; Kingsley Sarpong, age 20; Razak Seidu, age 20; Nastalari Darko, age 19; Samuel Kabinu, aged 27; Darlington Asuma, 23 years old.
Tobas Bawani, age 20; Foster Oduro, aged 24; Alexander Frimpong, aged 30; Ifanyi Prosper, aged 25; Prince Ernest, aged 27; Ifanyi Chukumei, aged 20; Kizito Watmu, aged 21; Nnamdi Ucheu, aged 22; Obina Wabonde, age 18; Judge Abenugwu, aged 18; Samuel Gabriel, age 24; Frank Odei, aged 25; Kelvin Santos, age 20; Joseph Success, age 17; and Abel Chukudu, 17 years old.
