Hi, I’m Sam, and I’m an Englishman living in London. I love to travel, and I’ve always wanted to go to Japan!
I went back to my pre-COVID travels and made a list of casual observations about Japan/Tokyo that I thought were worth mentioning.
1.
There are these lorries driving around loudly, probably for promotion.
2.
There are certain restaurants that you can order through the vending machine!
3.
You can buy sandwiches with crusts already cut off!
4.
You often get small baskets in restaurants to store things while sitting and eating.
Love this idea- in Japan all restaurants/coffee shops provide a basket when you sit down to put your handbag or shopping safely and neatly.

If you don’t already know, the Japanese love to keep things ~neat~.
5.
The traffic cones we see are more fun than we are.
6.
Some places have special slippers to wear in the toilet for hygiene reasons. I was told people do it at home!
7.
People don’t just take it dog for a walk!
8.
Most stores in Tokyo will tape your shopping bag as proof of purchase.
9.
People ride their bikes on the sidewalk as well as on the road.
10.
The stores have a variety of drinks, including this neon green melon soda, which is addictive.
11.
All countries are obsessed with cute things – for example, kittens, puppies, rabbits, mice.
12.
The train seat can be rotated in the direction of travel for your pleasure.
13.
There are flat wooden flip-flops called “geta” (similar to clogs) that Japanese people sometimes wear.
14.
You can’t smoke anywhere – there are designated cages on the street for smokers.
15.
Ninety-five percent of the toilet is ~ super~ good, with many buttons to improve the experience of going to the toilet!
16.
There is a “maid cafe” where young women dress up as maids and serve food and drink.
17.
And finally, when the train pulls into the tube station, a charming little jingle plays over the tannoy.

Bonus – I must include this point about masks, which I wrote back in 2019: And of course, everyone wears a face mask, for various reasons such as wanting to avoid air pollution, allergens, or germs or even wanting to cover a place. or disability!
