The 137 pupils abducted by terrorists at a public school in Chikun Local Government Area of Kaduna State have been released.
PREMIUM TIMES reported how terrorists abducted the children and the school’s principal on 7 March at a joint premises of a primary and secondary school in Kuriga community during the students’ morning assembly.
One of President Bola Tinubu‘s spokespersons, Abdulaziz Abdulaziz, in a Facebook post on Sunday, said the children were successfully rescued.
“To God be the glory, all the 137 abducted school children in the Kuriga community have been rescued”, Mr Abdulaziz said in a brief statement he posted on his Facebook page in Hausa language.
However, Mr Abdulaziz did not state whether the release of the children involved the payment of a ransom to their abductors, as the terrorists had earlier demanded N1 billion as ransom.
Earlier, the school authority gave the number of abducted children as 287. It was not immediately clear whether the school authority was uncertain about the number of the abducted students or others are still in captivity.
The pupils were released after 17 days in captivity. Their release followed that of 17 pupils abducted in another school in Sokoto state.
The Sokoto students were freed on Saturday following their abduction on 9 March from a Tsangaya school in Gidan Baya in Gada Local Government Area of Sokoto State.
