Four children from an Indigenous community in Colombia have been found alive in the south of the country more than two weeks after the plane they were on crashed in thick jungle, President Gustavo Petro said on Wednesday.
The children were rescued by members of the military, firefighters and civil aviation authority officials in the dense forest of Colombia’s Caqueta province.
The plane, a Cessna 206, was carrying seven people between Araracuara, in Amazonas province, and San Jose del Guaviare, a town in Guaviare province, when it issued a mayday signal due to engine failure early on May 1.
“After a difficult search by our military, we found four children alive who disappeared after the plane crash in Guaviare. Joy for the country,” Petro said in a Twitter post.
Three adults were killed in the accident
Three adults, including the pilot, died in the crash and their bodies were found inside the plane. Four children, aged 13, nine and four, as well as an 11-month-old baby, survived the impact.
Initial information from the civil aviation authority, which is coordinating the rescue effort, suggests the children escaped from the plane and went into the rainforest to find help.
Rescuers, supported by search dogs, had previously found fruit thrown away by children who had been eaten to survive, as well as improvised shelters made with forest vegetation.
