10 people gunned down in separate mass shootings in Eastern Cape



Police spokesperson Brigadier Tembinkosi Kinana on Thursday said the two mass shootings took place in OR Tambo District.

The first incident occurred at about 8:00 p.m., when an unknown suspect entered a house in Thantseka location and shot an elderly woman, 62 years old, and her 13-year-old grandson.

“It is alleged that he then moved to the second house and shot and killed a 44-year-old woman. The deceased was the elder daughter,” Kinana said in a statement.

Another unrelated incident occurred at about 11:40 a.m., when unknown gunmen entered a rondavel in Qunu and shot seven people. Four men and three women, aged between 32 and 46, died.

“All seven were fatally wounded. The circumstances surrounding the incident are under investigation.

The investigation is in its early stages

Kinana said the investigation was at an early stage and the motive for the attack was unknown. No arrests have been made.

Police could not determine if the two incidents were related, Kinana added.

“Police are on the hunt for suspects in both incidents. Anyone with information that could lead to the arrest of the suspects is advised to contact the SAPS Bityi station commander, Lieutenant Colonel Lindile Maqungwana on 079 696 0708.

The mass shooting happened just days after seven people were shot dead and four others injured on Sunday evening, at a house party in KwaZakhele in Gqeberha.

No arrests have been made in connection with the shooting.
