1% E-levy: GRA Drops Latest Update

The Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) has assured mobile money customers who were wrongly overcharged as a result of the implementation of the 1% Electronic Transaction Levy (E-Levy) reimbursement.

The implementation of the reduction in E-Llevy from 1.5% to 1% started on Wednesday, January 11.

The levy reduction was made known in the 2023 Budget and Economic Policy Statement tabled on the floor of Parliament last year by the Minister of Finance, Ken Ofori-Atta.

A member of the E-levy Technical Committee at the GRA, Opoku Afriyie Asante assured Ghanaians that adequate steps have been taken to address the challenges of the revised revision.

“I want to assure the general public that the Commissioner General is doing everything possible and that in the event of a system disruption, the GRA will be available to reimburse you if you are wrongfully deducted,” said Mr. Afriyie Asante.

The levy has failed to meet all revenue targets since its launch with players in the telecom space raising concerns about the practicality of running an effective mobile money service with the levy.

After the implementation of the levy, the telecommunications company registered more than 300,000 mobile money customers in April 2022, but the number continues to increase.
