Thunderstorms across the country expected on Saturday



The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued a level 2 yellow warning for severe thunderstorms in the province on Saturday.

Thunderstorms may cause hail, strong winds and severe lightning and flash floods in places in Gauteng, North West, Free State, Mpumalanga and the Northern Cape.

SAWS has also warned of wind leading to difficulties in navigation in the sea between Dassen Island and Hermanus where build-up of sand can be on the coastal route of Teluk Pusu.

High fire danger conditions are expected in Kamiesberg municipality in the Northern Cape and the entire West Coast district of the Western Cape.

Weather forecast for Saturday

Gauteng: Cloudy and cool with rain and thunder. Desirable UVB sunburn index: High.

east: Cloudy and cold with rain and thunder, but scattered in the central and south-west.

Limpopo: Cloudy and cool to warm with scattered showers and thunderstorms in the south.

Northwest: Partly cloudy and warm with scattered showers and thunderstorms.

Free State: Early morning fog appeared in the east, but it was partly cloudy and cold to warm, with scattered but isolated showers and thunderstorms across Lesotho.

Northern Cape: Partly cloudy and warm to hot but very hot in the interior, with scattered but isolated showers and thunder in the northeast. It will be good in the southwest. Winds on the coast will be moderate to fresh from the south to the southeast.

Western Cape: Partly cloudy on the south coast in the morning, otherwise fine and warm on the south coast, but very hot in the interior of the West Coast District. The wind along the coast will be moderate to fresh from the east on the south coast, or from the southeast to the south but strong to near gale on the southwest coast. Expected UVB sunburn index: Extreme.

Western Half of the Eastern Cape: Partly cloudy in the first place, if not nice and warm. Winds along the coast will be light to moderate from the northeast, becoming moderate to fresh from the east in the morning.

Eastern Half of the Eastern Cape: Good along the escarpment, if cloudy and cool but warm in places, clear in the west. Isolated thunderstorms are expected in places to the north. Winds along the coast will be light to moderate from the northeast, but fresh in the evening.

KwaZulu-Natal: Morning fog is visible in places inland, otherwise it will be partly cloudy and cold but warm in the east. Showers and thunderstorms are expected. Winds along the coast will be moderate from south to southeast to east to northeast from south. Desirable UVB sunburn index: Low.
