Rainfall chances in Gauteng to increase to 80% on Thursday



Most of the rainfall expected in Gauteng in the first week of the New Year will be on Wednesday, according to the South African Weather Service (SAWS).

Some parts of the country including Gauteng have been experiencing heavy rains for some time now since the start of this summer, due to the La Nina weather system.

There are two distinct weather systems in La Nina and El Nino with the latter being associated with heavy rainfall.

This is the third consecutive La Niña season the country has experienced, which brings a lot of rain.

Talk to The Warga Saturday, forecaster at SAWS Puseletso Mofokeng said residents in Gauteng can expect a 60% chance of rain and thundershowers on Saturday.

“Residents in Mpumalanga, KwaZulu Natal (KZN) as well as the Free State and Eastern Cape can also expect a 60% chance of rain and thunder.

“The situation is expected to worsen on Thursday with an 80% chance of rain and thundershowers in KZN, but we will be announcing the possibility of thunderstorms closer to that time,” Mofokeng said.

While partly cloudy conditions are expected there with a 30% chance of rain and thundershowers are expected over Gauteng, the North West, and much of the Northern Cape – it is in the Free State where the probability is higher at 60%.

“No rainfall is expected in coastal areas of KZN, Eastern Cape and Western Cape,” Mofokeng said.

Meanwhile, SAWS had earlier warned of above normal rainfall for the current summer season.
