‘Queen Elizabeth came to Ghana just to greet the Chief Vandal’ – Former JCR president claims | Social

Bernard Oduro Takyi, former president of JCR Commonwealth Hall, University of Ghana, has called on the management of the university to maintain the reputation and tradition of the Commonwealth Council and not seek to change its current status.

He said it was unconstitutional for the university administration to try to remove all male students enrolled in the Sarbah Mensah Hall and the Commonwealth Hall.

Making a case for why the hall’s long-standing reputation and tradition should be preserved, he claimed that due to the hall’s status, Queen Elizabeth II flew from England in 1957 to honor the hall’s Chief Vandal.

“In 2023 they want to throw out every student here and bring only new students, and we don’t say. This hall you see, all the Queen Elizabeths came from England to greet our vandal head in 1957 and you think they will sit in one the vice-chancellor with a professor to replace the hall, he joked,” said Bernard Oduro Takyi angrily.

The former president of JCR from the Commonwealth Hall in an interview with GhanaWeb said the University has a system in place to deal with housing issues and that the management violated relevant laws and took unconstitutional measures.

The management of the University of Ghana last December canceled the accommodation of all male students from the Commonwealth and Mensah Sarbah Halls after another round of clashes involving the two feuding halls.

According to a statement signed by the Registrar of the University on December 14, 2022, residents are to be randomly assigned to rooms available in one of the University of Ghana Enterprise Limited Hostel (UGEl) and private dormitories.

The statement further mentioned that the continuation of female students of Balai Mensah Sarbah and students with special needs in both halls will not be affected.
