Motaung had the opportunity to play against Pele in 1968, when he took the field for the US club Atlanta Chiefs against the Brazilian club Santos, where Pele was a star player, and had won two FIFA World Cups with Brazil (he had to add two more years later in Mexico.
Pele scored a hat-trick as Santos beat Chiefs 6-2, while Motaung grabbed a consolation for his side.
“The event was unbelievable,” recalled Motaung, speaking to the Kaizer Chiefs media.
“We know that we are not only playing Santos, but also the greatest player of my life. They beat us 6-2 and they scored about three goals, although I am happy that I also scored one!
“He is an unbelievable character, on and off the field. You cannot find a more humble person, you will not believe that he is the top athlete in the world,” added Motaung.
Pele went first
“What Pele left in the world is that regardless of your background or education, there is an opportunity for all of us to achieve and achieve. In simple terms if you put your heart and mind into what you want, you will succeed.
“If you look at modern football and all the artists and stars we have today, Ronaldo or Messi or Mbappe or whoever… whatever he does, Pele does it first, whether it’s a bicycle kick or whatever, he does it more first, every technique he did. it happened, all kinds of goals scored today, Pele made it first.”
