
Divorce can be a traumatic experience for most people who choose to take the plunge, but Black Brain Pictures wants to show that “every dark cloud has a silver lining” with its new Mzansi Magic sitcom titled Marriage is not a game.
The show, named after a popular Nguni phrase, focuses on how humor can be a catalyst for healing.
Starring Meshack Magabane and Mapaseka Koetle, the 13-episode comedy follows the drama that unfolds after Desmond (Magabane) and Mpho (Koetle) decide to end their marriage, and try to find a new life of parenting, family, finances and trials. to date – all while still living under the same roof!
“Over the past few years, the genres of telenovelas, dramas and reality have become hits with the audience. One of the genres that we really like to see on our channel is comedy. We are constantly ahead of the curve when it comes to the tastes and preferences of the audience, and we -various line-up is a step that we believe the audience will embrace,” explained Shirley Adonisi, Director of Local Entertainment Channels at M-Net.
What is ‘Marriage is not a Game’?
The story begins when one of the main characters, Mpho, 40, believes it is the perfect time to end her 15-year marriage to Desmond.
“After being a devoted wife and mother to two children, she reached the point where she asked for a divorce from Desmond.
“Expecting a smooth process, dramatic – and sometimes funny – things happen when Mpho realizes that he can’t leave the house because of the divorce process… and neither can his wife. Both are trapped when they try to start a new life without each other. Who will crack first?
“We are proud of the contribution we have made to the growth of the South African film and television industry and we are delighted to return to the genre that started it all for Black Brain Pictures. We can’t wait for audiences to enjoy the much needed humor that we will bring to the screen with our new production ,” said Mandla N, Creative Director of Black Brain Pictures.

Black Brain Pictures describes itself as a full service, 360 production house and is responsible for showing like DiepCity, Lockdown, Black Door and Ses’Top La among other projects.

In addition to award winners Mavuso Magabane and Pasi Koetle, players from Marriage is not a game including both established names as well as up-and-comers.
Viewers can expect to see screen legends Clementine Mosimane, Nomzamo ‘Zamo’ Dlamini, Mandla Gauduka, Nicholas Nkuna, Lindokuhle Mbonani, Siphiwe Ngcongwane and Thando Dunjani.
Marriage is not a game premieres on Monday, January 9, 2023, at 8pm, on DStv Channel 161.
