
The Lagos State Universal Basic Education Board (LASUBEB)’s Excellence in Child Education and Learning (EKOEXCEL) has trained parents and guardians, especially those with children in primary six, on how to prepare for the transition to secondary school.
EKOEXCEL introduced the Primary Six counseling initiative at the recently concluded Parent Teacher Conference in all 1012 public primary schools in Lagos.
Part of EKOEXCEL’s efforts to continue to provide life-changing education to all students, it also helps parents and guardians decide early on the educational path for their children and wards.
EKOEXCEL’s technical support team, together with teachers, explained why parents should know about the available secondary schools and how EKOEXCEL prepares students for life and learning in higher schools at the conference.
Parents are also given information about their child’s five main high school options, the requirements for each and an assessment of the student’s academic ability.
The top five options parents shared at the forum were federal unity college, Lagos State model college, Lagos State community school, military secondary school and private secondary school.
The facilitator also enlightened parents on the special exams that qualify students for each secondary school, including Lagos State Placement Test (LSPT), Lagos State Screening Test (LSST) for model colleges, National Common Entrance Examination (NCEE) for unitary schools federal, and military and private school exams.
Highlighting how EKOEXCEL helps prepare students for Year Sic, LASUBEB Chairman, Wahab Alawiye-King, said that the initiative has “General Entrance preparation lessons sent through teachers’ computers every day. These lessons reflect the expectations of the various exams required for the pathway any education.
He added, “EKOEXCEL also conducted the Mock Unified Common Entrance Examination from the third semester of Elementary School Lima.
This means that sixth graders will have several exam opportunities to practice before the actual exam in sixth grade. EKOEXCEL closes the literacy and numeracy gap by providing additional lessons so that all children with fundamental problems can close the gap, read adequately and be prepared for high school success.
Parents, who attended the conference, praised EKOEXCEL for the Primary Six Post-primary Counseling initiative, noting that it was informative and would help them make good choices for their children. He also shared his hopes for his children.
One Mrs. Modupe Omotayo, who has two children at CMS Primary School, Bariga, said, “the session was very informative. I expect my children to do well, and they should come out well in the external examination.
Mr. Sunday Taiwo, who has five children in the same school, said, “the conference was okay. It helped me choose the type of school my child will attend. I also have to praise EKOEXCEL’s way of teaching my children.
Another parent, Mrs. Uchechi Obinwa, whose two children attend Deacon Adelaja Primary School, Bariga, said they are learning about the school selection process and expect their children’s performance to improve with the introduction of EKOEXCEL Lagos state.
“The conference was fun and, at the same time, educational. Now, I expect my children to come out with flying colors in the public entrance exam,” said Mr. Mohammed Ndababa, whose children attend CMS Primary School Bariga. He added that “EKOEXCEL has increased my children’s IQ.”
Since its inauguration in 2019 by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, EKOEXCEL, which is operated by LASUBEB with technical support from the global edtech platform, New Globe, has improved learning outcomes among Lagos students and raised more than 90 percent of the main teachers in Lagos State.
