Kwame Poku makes return from injury in QPR’s narrow defeat to Birmingham City

Ghanaian forward Kwame Poku marked his return to action on Wednesday night, coming off the bench in Queens Park Rangers’ 1-0 defeat to Birmingham City at St Andrew’s.

Patrick Roberts’ sixth-minute strike proved decisive in a first half where the R’s struggled to find their rhythm. Despite a late rally, Julien Stéphan’s side were unable to find an equaliser.

Poku’s introduction in the 70th minute was a welcome sight for QPR fans, with the summer signing having been sidelined through injury in recent weeks. The Ghanaian showed immediate promise, displaying neat touches and driving at the Birmingham defence.

Within two minutes of his arrival, Poku fed Harvey Vale, whose shot drifted just wide. On 75 minutes, he drove into the box and fired low at goalkeeper James Beadle, and deep into stoppage time, his 25-yard effort whistled past the post as QPR pushed desperately for a leveller.

The defeat extends QPR’s losing run to four matches, following previous losses to Southampton, Sheffield United, and Middlesbrough. Birmingham, sitting just two points above the R’s in 12th, had also entered the match on a three-game losing streak.

Stéphan made four changes during the contest, with Poku’s introduction part of a second-half reshuffle aimed at sparking a response. The R’s will now turn their attention to Saturday’s fixture against Leicester City.

For Poku, the cameo represents a positive step as he works his way back to full match fitness after his injury layoff.
