The Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) has completed its 2022 enforcement exercise in the hospitality and tourism industry, registering five additional companies that do not pay VAT.
The company, Accra Park Playground, Hallmark Café, Farmers Haus, Club Smooth and Tinsel Town Pub were arrested and summoned for investigation for various violations including non-registration and non-issuance of VAT invoices.
Such enforcement has been implemented in many sectors of the economy.
The Head of GRA Accra’s Central Enforcement Unit, Joseph Annan, said the five companies will be forced by the Authority to do the right thing as the law is put in place to ensure that compliance is maximized.
“We have selected the records and invited them to the office to assist in the investigation so that we can recover what the country has lost,” he said.
Good thing Mr. Annan disclosed that some event centers have repeated Coupon Authority and sell to new customers, the violation said, it is a crime.
“We do not want to mention names. We will deal with them after the case has been verified, because this is a clear tax evasion” Mr. Annan noted.
In the last five weeks of 2022, the Authority arrested the operators of 15 stone and sand mining sites operating in Shai Hills, Nsawam and Gomoa enclaves.
Over the course of five weeks, the operators of six department stores in A&C Shopping Mall, and two other supermarkets in Dansoman as well as several restaurants and pubs, were also arrested for various VAT violations including non-registration, non-issuance and selective issuance.
But Mr Annan announced that investigations into the various failed companies had begun, as key documents including personal receipts, his own invoices, laptop machines and other records were seized to aid the investigation.
GRA, Mr. Annan said he has a monthly target to raise about GH¢ 15 billion in December 2022, to meet the overall GH¢ 80.3 billion annual target.
“We are determined and we believe we can achieve the target. However, we need the support of citizens and business collaboration to realize this ambition. Every taxpayer must contribute to building the nation,” he said.
