The Ministry of Finance (MoF) has partnered with the Ghana National Council of Private Schools (GNACOPS) to train 800 private school teachers and managers for the first phase of the education leadership sponsored program in Accra.
A national training and retraining program is included in the Ghana Cares Obaatapa initiative with a focus on skill enhancement, work ethic, productivity enhancement, and attitude change aimed at developing professionalism in private school sector education.
The five-day training program is centered on four thematic areas; Educational Governance, Curriculum Development, School Management, and Financial Management to help improve the educational operations of private schools to meet government standards and requirements.
The Head of the International and Regional Economic Policy Unit in the Economic Strategy and Research Division of the Ministry of Finance (MoF), Enoch Obeng-Darko in his speech noted that the development of the training program is in the background of his influence. The COVID-19 pandemic in private schools in the country.
“This is a call for the background of the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. The government started a specific program that supports public education teachers. But we are also informed that the private sector in terms of school owners and teachers is suffering from the pandemic.
Against this background, the government met with social support partners; The Ministry of Employment and Labor Relations, (MoELR), and the Labor Organization and Employment Association to see how best to put a mechanism to support the private education sector and the hospitality industry”.
According to Mr. Obeng-Darko, similar programs are being implemented by different educational institutions across the country to help build the teaching capacity of teachers and school owners.
On his part, the Executive Director of GNACOPS, Enoch Kwesi Gyetuah said the leadership program enables private school owners to create a lasting partnership with the Ministry of Finance in terms of capacity building that will result in optimal productivity.
He further explained that supervisors from the University of Education, Winneba, the Trade Union Congress (TUC), the National Council for Curriculum and Assessment (NaCCA), and other institutions will be present to monitor the programme.
In addition, the Deputy Secretary in charge of Professional Operations at the National Teaching Council (NTC), Lawrence Sarpong appealed to the beneficiaries of the program to deliver educational content that is in line with the country’s national goals.
He said that the education system is undergoing various transformations and it is necessary for private schools to learn and adapt to the changes in the education system in order to keep up with global trends.
There were also messages of solidarity from the Private Education Coalition (PEC), the National School Inspectorate Authority (NaSIA), NaCCA, and other implementing partners.
