Ghana and Morocco have become the first African countries to impose travel bans on passengers from China over concerns about the coronavirus.
As of Tuesday, Morocco has banned travelers from China regardless of nationality until further notice.
The foreign ministry said the move was aimed at preventing infections in the country.
Ghana’s restrictions will come into effect on Friday.
The move comes after China suddenly eased its grip on Covid-19 in December last year.
Other countries outside Africa have also imposed restrictions.
For example, passengers arriving in the UK from China must now provide a negative Covid test before boarding. The US tests people when they arrive.
Countries that plan to test travelers say the policy will help identify worrisome new variants and prevent the spread of cases.
Ghana said passengers from China will be tested at the airport for free and must also provide negative test results 48 hours before arrival.
International health experts say lifting restrictions in China is causing Covid-19 to spread faster.
But Beijing’s foreign minister said the coronavirus rules should only be introduced on a “scientific” basis and accused Western countries and the media of “hyping” the situation.
