Education Minister to meet University of Ghana management over fees hike

“Minister of Education, Dr. Yaw Adutwum, once again intervened and invited the university in question. We have University of Ghana (UG), University of Cape Coast (UCC), Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) and several other public universities. Hence the invitation, I hope to meet with GTEC this Thursday [January 5, 2023]. The goal is to find a lasting solution or solve this problem,” said the Public Relations Officer of the Ministry of Education.

But he stressed that the various universities must comply with the directives of Parliament backed by legislation.

“The most important thing is that the law is clear, the law has provided the framework that must be paid. Parliament has done its job, so the hope is that if there are conflicting opinions or disagreements, the law will be implemented. In issues like this, not only about enforcement, but sometimes compliance is also very important. So when the Parliament, the legislative government makes a decision supported by law, and we have a university that contradicts the decision, another question is what happens with compliance,” said Mr. Kwarteng.

The student body has accused the University of Ghana and other public universities of defying Parliament’s directive to increase fees by 15%.

UG management has justified its decision to increase fees.
