Cristiano Ronaldo has signed for Saudi Arabian side Al-Nassr FC, according to the club.

The 37-year-old joined on a two-and-a-half-year deal after leaving Manchester United last month.

It followed an explosive television interview in which the striker said he felt betrayed by the club and disrespected by Dutch manager Erik ten Hag.

A statement on Al-Nassr’s Instagram said: “This is more than history made.

“This is a sign that not only inspires our club to succeed, but also inspires the league, the nation and future generations, men and women to be the best versions of themselves.”

Ronaldo is set to undergo a medical at Mrsool Park, the modern home of Al-Nassr, before completing the formalities and unveiling to fans in the club’s yellow and blue colors in the Saudi Arabian capital of Riyadh in the coming days.

“I really want to experience a new football league in another country. The vision of Al-Nassr Club is very inspiring,” the Saudi club quoted Ronaldo as saying.

While the signing will prove a huge boost for Middle Eastern football, it will also fuel debate over Saudi Arabia’s use of so-called “sports laundering” to boost the country’s image internationally.
