Feistier updated Hyundai Grand i10 bows at Delhi Auto Expo

Hyundai has used the opening day of the Delhi Auto Expo in India to unveil the updated Grand i10 Nios less than three years after its initial launch.

The car that provides the basis for the popular Grand i10 in South Africa, without the Nios suffix, mid-life tweaks not only include the interior and exterior, but also under the bonnet where the turbocharged engine of the previous range has been completed.

What has changed?

Unchanged in dimensions from the pre-facelift model, the Grand i10’s visual changes include a wider grille and revamped front bumper, new LED daytime running lights and on higher trim levels, newly designed 15-inch alloy wheels.

At the back resides the biggest change in the shape of the new light cluster apparently derived from the original Grand i10, stylized Nios badging across the tailgate below the Hyundai logo and the new LED light bar that connects the cluster.

Inside, the eight-inch touchscreen infotainment system and 3.5-inch TFT instrument cluster display continue on the more premium models, though now bolstered by metal-effect finishes, gray seat upholstery and a leather-wrapped multi-function steering wheel.

New on the specification front are a tire pressure monitor, USB type-C port, cruise control, automatic on/off lights, keyless start and up to six airbags with four standard across all trim levels, along with ABS and EBD.

The turbo was blown

As mentioned, the main buzz for the Grand i10 is the output of the 1.0-litre turbocharged petrol which sends 74kW / 172Nm to the front wheels via a five-speed manual gearbox.

Therefore, a normally aspirated 1.2-litre petrol engine is the sole option, with 61kW / 114Nm transferred to the front axle via a five-speed gearbox or an optional five-speed automatic manual.

Now available for order with an expected price of around Rs 600 000 (R124 218), a total of six colors will be available; Polar White, Typhoon Silver, Titan Grey, Teal Blue, Fiery Red and Spark Green with the additional option of a black roof in the former and latter options.

Coming to South Africa?

While unconfirmed at present, it is likely that the Grand i10 Nios will be available in South Africa later this year, again without the Nios designation, with an unchanged engine line-up but priced slightly higher than the R214 900 asked for by the entry-level 1.0. mobile.
