UG Rusticates 4 Students For 3 Years | Education

The University of Ghana (UG), has suspended the former Junior Common Room (JCR) Executives from the Commonwealth Hall for three academic years for holding a series of meetings, contrary to the school’s statute.

The names of the suspended students are Paul Anim Inkoom, JCR President, Bright Gati, JCR Vice President, Daniel Kofi Boakye, JCR Secretary and Daniel Odoi Nyarko, JCR Treasurer.
Frank Asare, Legal Advisor was acquitted and released after he was found not guilty by the authorities.

The rustication follows a complaint filed against former JCR executives who were affected by the Commonwealth hall who will be out of the university for the next three academic years.

In a notice issued by the University of Ghana on January 8, 2023, it said that the meetings held on August 18-19, 2022, sought to destroy the office of the Vice Chancellor, the Pro Vice Chancellor as well as the entire university. .

“On 18 and 19 August 2022, some former Junior Common Room (JCR) Executives of Commonwealth Hall organized or allowed the organization of meetings of Junior Common Room (JCR) Commonwealth Hall. These meetings provided a platform to post and publish false, reckless and defamatory statements to Senior officials who make the office of Vice Chancellor, Pro Vice Chancellor as well as the university as a whole.

Also “following a complaint lodged against the affected students, the Disciplinary Council for Junior Members conducted a hearing and established a case of misconduct contrary to the University of Ghana 2011 statute. [as amended] and the University of Ghana regulations for Junior Members 2017, to the former JCR executive from the Commonwealth hall,” the UG notice said.

UG advises students to be aware of university rules to refrain from saying such things.

SANCTIONS AGAINST EXECUTIVE JCR COMMONWEALTH HALL

On 18 and 19 August 2022, some former Junior Common Room (JCR) Executives of Commonwealth Hall organized or allowed the organization of Commonwealth Hall Junior Common Room (JCR) meetings. The meeting provided a platform to post and publish false, reckless and slanderous statements against Senior Officials of the University, which brought the Office of the Vice-Chancellor, Pro Vice-Chancellor (Academic and Student Affairs) and the University as a whole into disrepute.

Following a complaint lodged against the affected students, the Disciplinary Council for Junior Members held a hearing and established a case of misconduct contrary to the Statute of the University of Ghana 2011 (as amended) and the University of Ghana Regulations for Junior Members, 2017, against the former Executive of the JCR of the Commonwealth Hall.

The Disciplinary Board also found that the conduct contravened Statute 42(1)(n) and (o) of the Statute of the University of Ghana 2011 (as amended), and Regulation 7.11(c)(xiv) and (xv); and (f)(ii) and (iii)) University of Ghana Regulations for Junior Members, 2017.

In this regard, and in accordance with Section 45 (g) of the Statute of the University of Ghana, 2011 (as amended), sanctions and decisions have been passed as follows:

*Sanctions run concurrently with previous sanctions for misconduct due to blatant disobedience to the Vice Chancellor and Dean of Students.

Mr. Paul Anim Inkoom has previously been suspended for two (2) academic years after being found guilty of misconduct, contrary to Regulation 7.1(e) and 7.1(g) of the University of Ghana Regulations for Junior Members, 2017.

Students are advised and encouraged to familiarize themselves with the contents of the Student Statutes and Regulations, which are available on the University’s website, as violations of these Statutes and Regulations will result in appropriate sanctions.
