Court Stops UG New Residential Policy | Education

The Accra High Court has imposed an interlocutory injunction on the housing policy decision by the University of Ghana (UG).

This is after some frustrated students from the University Commonwealth Council on Friday, January 6, 2023, filed a lawsuit against the university for directing students who live to find accommodation outside the campus as a result of possible housing problems in the University as a few. new students will definitely need to rent off campus when it reopens.

As of October 26, 2022, the University of Ghana is asking students at Commonwealth Hall to seek accommodation outside the campus.

“All students continue from Commonwealth Hall and male students continue to Mensah Sarbah Hall will not return to this hall or the traditional gallery. They must be randomly assigned to rooms available in UGEL and private dormitories.

“Starting the academic year 2022/2023, only Level 100 and postgraduate students (Master’s and Ph.D. level) will be assigned to Mensah Sarbah and Commonwealth Hall. Furthermore, undergraduate students will vacate the hall at the end of Level 100 and can secure accommodation in the hostel private from Level 200 to completion,” said UG management.

However, the court’s verdict on the matter said that the status quo should be maintained as it was before the UG instructions dated October 26, 2022.

“IT IS ORDERED that the Defendant hereby restrains himself or his officers, agents, men, agents, workers, or any person working under the instructions of the Defendant not to carry out the decision of the Defendant, dated October 26, 2022 in relation to the housing policy decision affecting the continued student Commonwealth Hall, University of Ghana. The status quo must be maintained, as before the decision of 26 October 2022”.

Below are the complete rules of UG for student housing from the academic year 2022/2023.

The University Council has discussed the recommendations of the Residence Council and the Academic Council regarding changes in student accommodation arrangements. The board called for the change after repeated incidents of violence involving students.

The Council approved the following measures to take effect from the beginning of the academic year 2022/2023, in order to prevent future incidents of violence:

All students who continue from Commonwealth Hall and male students who continue from Mensah Sarbah Hall will not return to that hall or the traditional gallery. They should be randomly assigned to rooms available in UGEL and private dormitories. This move will not affect female students of Mensah Sarbah Hall and students with special needs in both halls.

From the academic year 2022/2023, only Level 100 and postgraduate students (Master’s and Ph.D. level) will be assigned to Mensah Sarbah and Balai Persemakmuran. Furthermore, undergraduate students will vacate the halls at the end of Level 100 and can secure accommodation in private dormitories from Level 200 until completion.

100-level students who choose a traditional hall will be randomly assigned to a hall.

Progressively, all traditional halls (Mensah Sarbah, Commonwealth, Volta, Legon, and Akuafo halls) will be reserved for Level 100 and only for postgraduate students, with the peak of the full entry-exit policy in 2025/2026.

In addition, the University installed CCTV cameras and Electronic Access control systems in all halls to enhance security.

All students must observe these rules. More details will be announced before the start of the 2022/2023 academic year.
