A fifth goal in as many games from Cassius Mailula and a strike from Haashim Domingo was enough to give Masandawana their ninth league win on the trot, although they had to fight off a spirited display by Richards Bay in the second half.

“I told the players today that we beat a very good team that is fresher than us, they don’t have a midweek match. I think it was a very good match and we all deserved to win,” said the Sundowns head coach after the match.

“Richards Bay are pushing us, they are third in the table and very difficult to beat.

“A lot of teams struggle to come here and take points. I thought in the first half we were exceptional. We ran out of legs in the second half, but sometimes teams have to suffer together.

Suffer together

“When you suffer together, it helps you in a game where you have no legs. You have to trust each other and be there for each other.”

The Sundowns head coach insists there is still plenty of room for improvement in his side, despite their good run.

“There’s a long way to go, we’re not there yet,” he said.

“We gave Richards Bay a lot of chances to score, especially in the second half, and we’re not a team that usually does that. So there’s a lot to improve on, but credit to the players.
