The fight against corruption is still my democracy’s priority – Nana Addo
President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has once again renewed his government’s determination to eliminate public sector corruption.
The President maintains that he is determined to fight cancer by strengthening anti-corruption institutions, transparency of governance and protection of the public purse.
In a televised address to the nation on the eve of Constitution Day to mark 30 years of Ghana’s Fourth Republic, Nana Akufo-Addo said his government should be credited for some giant steps aimed at ending the menace.
“I say, without any form of equivocation, that my government has carried out, perhaps, the most daring initiative since independence to reform and strengthen the capacity of our institutions to deal with corruption in the public sector”.
Corruption, according to many activists and Civil Society Organizations has increased in the years under the Akufo-Addo government.
He feels this administration tops the list of most corruption cases.
But President Akufo-Addo further emphasized that: “If we seek to prolong our democratic journey, it is very important that we promote transparency and accountability in our governance structures, and build strong institutions that can fight corruption and waste public funds.”
The president did not stop there.
He pointed out that, the establishment of the Office of the Special Prosecutor and the same resources remain as a single act of commitment that the Akufo-Addo government has prioritized the fight against corruption that has become entrenched describing it as an “independent body, non-partisan. , with relevant professional capabilities and mandate exclusively to investigate and prosecute acts of corruption.”
Despite the attack on his reputation, the government has mounted a spirited defense to fight its corruption, especially with the establishment of the Office.
The office has been condemned by Ghanaians for being ineffective in fighting corruption years after its establishment as not a single corruption case has been resolved with those involved in the prosecution.
