Dante Alinsunurin has proven his worth on the bench many times and is expected to do well with Choco Mucho in the Major Volleyball League, not to mention that he will be handling the women’s team for the first time.
“My coaching style will be the same,” said Alinsunurin, who has won the men’s title in the UAAP and the Spikers’ Turf with the National University besides having the Philippines’ silver medal at the 2019 Southeast Asian Games to his credit.
“There are some adjustments because of women [division] have a different style of play,” he added.
A major adjustment for Alinsunurin at this time, it seems, juggling time with several commitments already in place before he received the post to handle the popular Flying Titans.
He will still be the head tactician for the Bulldogs when the UAAP opens its season in February, and will handle the National men’s team at SEAG Cambodia in May.
“It’s just a matter of managing time when it comes to practice,” Alinsunurin told the Inquirer. “And besides, the National team hasn’t assembled yet.
Despite commanding the crowd every time they play, Choco Mucho has fallen short as the Flying Titans failed to make it past the Reinforced Conference eliminations and Invitational last year.
Alinsunurin, though, knows the material at his disposal, and giving the Flying Titans a different system at this time can be a trick.
Underachieving
Choco Mucho is also yet to make a title run in the Premier Volleyball League, which opens the new season with the Conference Open on February 4.
“I decided to join the Choco Mucho team because I believe that my system applies to him because he has the height and skills,” he said. “We just need a little polish.”
The colorful Oliver Almadro stepped down in the middle of the Flying Titans’ campaign in the Reinforced Conference, as Edjet Mabbayad called the shots in the interim and posted a 3-5 record.
Alinsunurin, who also led the Bulldogs to a gold medal at the 2018 Asean University Games in Myanmar before claiming silver at the 2022 edition in Thailand, will inherit a Choco Mucho squad anchored by Kat Tolentino, Deanna Wong, Desiree Cheng, Isa Molde and Bea De Leon, Maddie Glory, and libero Denden Lazaro-Revilla.
