Ignoring Publication of ’48 Accused Terrorists’ – Police, GIS
The Ghana Police Service and the Ghana Immigration Service have responded to media publications stating that there is a blame game between the two state security institutions regarding the location of 48 suspected terrorists.
In a joint statement, the two institutions asked the public to ignore media publications saying they were false.
“No terrorist is believed to have been arrested by the police and the Ghana Immigration Service. And there is certainly no blame game between the institutions of the two countries as announced by the Ghanaian Times”, the statement read.
Continuing, “We would like to record so that there is no doubt that about 48 foreign nationals were arrested by the Police and the Immigration Service in two separate operations in Ekyem, Achia, and Akokoamong near Ejisu in the Ashanti Region in September. 2022 for participating in illegal Network Marketing (QNIET) “.
The statement revealed that all 48 suspects were profiled in line with the two institutions’ standard operating procedures and repatriated to their various countries of origin between September 26 and September 29, 2022.
Remember, 21 suspects were arrested on September 22, while the remaining 27 were arrested on September 24, 2022, in a special operation.
The information gathered shows that they are said to be from Niger, Nigeria, Kenya, and Mali.
The arrest was made in Ekyem, a community in Ejisu Municipality, based on information.
The investigation is focused on whether he has ties to terrorist groups, following recent terrorist acts in several neighboring countries.
Some of the suspects were placed in police custody in Fumesua and others in Donyina and Ejisu
But local newspaper reports show that there is some confusion where 48 foreigners were arrested in connection with alleged terrorism and other fraudulent acts in September, last year between the two state security institutions.
“While the police claimed that the suspect was handed over to the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) in Ejisu Municipality to deal with him, the latter insisted that the police are handling the matter” the report added.
The report further asserts that a police source at the Ejisu Divisional Police Command told Ghanaian Times in a follow-up exercise that the operation to arrest the suspects was carried out by the GIS.
A press release by the two state security institutions has asked the media to be careful using “terrorism” and to avoid using it loosely and irresponsibly which will create unnecessary tension and panic in the country.
