The police command in Kano State has announced the death of several people in Dawakin Tofa Local Government.
The police spokesman in Kano, Abdullahi Kiyawa, said preliminary investigations indicated that the deceased died of suffocation.
The couple have been identified as Suleiman Idris, 28, and Maimuna Halliru,
“The police on January 3 at about 9:00 p.m. received a report from Kwa Village, Dawakin Tofa LGA, Kano State, that a couple had not left their house since January 2 at about 11:00 a.m. WIB.
“The husband’s grandmother forced the door to their bedroom open, and she found the couple motionless in bed, with the smell of smoke in the room.
“When receiving the report, the Commissioner of the Police, Kano State Command, Mamman Dauda, directed a team of detectives led by the Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP) Ahmed Hamza, and the Divisional Police Officer (DPO), Dawakin Tofa Division to proceed to the scene.
“The victim was removed from the scene and rushed to Murtala Mohammed Specialist Hospital Kano where doctors confirmed the couple dead.
“Preliminary investigations revealed that the deceased couple used charcoal to warm their room because it was cold, locked it and were heard by the smoke coming from the charcoal fire while they were sleeping.
“However, the police said investigations are underway to unravel the circumstances that led to the death,” Mr Kiyawa said.
The Commissioner of Police advised residents to be careful when using fire, and electricity and to take safety measures as the harmattan season is associated with the risk of fire outbreaks.
