“We want to get married quickly. But the Palace can’t choose a date. Or a place,” the Duke of Sussex, 38, details in Spare’s forthcoming memoir, which Us Weekly exclusive can open. “While waiting for a decision from above, from the obscure upper reaches of the royal decision-making apparatus, we went on a traditional ‘engagement tour’.”
According to Harry, talks about marriage with William, 40, did not go as planned.
“When I came back from the trip, I heard Willy, someone called out, asking his thoughts about where we can get married,” he continued. “I told them we were thinking about Westminster Abbey. ‘It’s not good. We did it there.’ ‘Right, right. St. Paul?’ ‘It’s great. Besides, Dad and Mom do it there.’ ‘Hm. Yes, good point.'”
BetterUp’s CIO claims William reminded him that he wanted a “small and quiet wedding” with Meghan, 41. “In fact we want to explore. Barefoot in Botswana, maybe with a friend who is an official, that’s our dream,” he wrote. “But we expect to share this moment with others. It’s none of our business.”
Harry and Meghan finally got married at St George’s Chapel in Windsor, England, in May 2018, and were given the titles of Duke and Duchess of Sussex by Queen Elizabeth II at the time.
After surprising the public with their romance in 2016, the duo announced they were engaged a year later. “It was just an amazing surprise,” the former actress said BBC News about the proposal, which took place in Kensington Palace Nottingham Cottage in November 2017. “It was just so sweet and natural and very romantic. He got down on one knee. In fact, I could hardly let [him] finish applying. I was like, ‘Can I say yes now?’”
The couple announced in 2020 that they were stepping down from their duties as members of the royal family. Harry and Meghan chose to move from the UK to California and in February 2021, it was confirmed that they would not be returning to senior royal roles.
While making the Netflix documentary, Meghan recalls her first acquaintance with William and Princess Kate before the same rift.
“Even when William and Kate came and I met them for the first time, they came to dinner, and I remember that I was wearing ripped jeans and I was barefoot,” he shared in the December 2022 episode, adding that the two were the same. ‘t ready for her informal response. “I’m a hugger. I’ve always been a hugger. I don’t know if that’s a terrible thing for a lot of British people.
For Meghan, interacting with the royal family taught her what she wanted in the royal family. “I think I started to realize very quickly that the formality on the outside is done on the inside, that there’s a way of facing forward, and then you close the door and you go, ‘Oh, okay, OK, I can relax now,'” he continued. “But the formalities were followed on both sides, and I was surprised.”
