Rep. Cori Bush (D-Mo.) blasted Republicans on Friday for admitting to advance racial equality amid infighting in the House of Representatives, saying they used fellow Black lawmaker Rep. Byron Donalds (R-Fla.) as “a. prop.”
Conservative members who refused to resign Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) as the new speaker of the House rallied around Donalds on Friday, giving 20 votes for the speakership in the fourth and fifth rounds of voting. In nominating Donalds, Rep. Chip Roy (R-Texas) referenced civil rights icon Martin Luther King Jr. and said that Republicans “seek not to judge men by the color of their skin, but the content of their character.”
The nomination means that for the first time in history, both major parties are nominating Black candidates to run the House. Democrats support Rep. Hakeem Jeffries (NY), who leads the caucus.
But Bush noted on Twitter that GOP policies offer little to combat racism and structural inequality. “Though black, [Donalds] supports a policy agenda to uphold and preserve white supremacy,” the Missouri Democrat said.
He later developed his comments – and conservative ones pushback to his tweets — to HuffPost.
“My problem is not with Byron Donalds himself. My problem is not with him being Black. My problem is not with him being a Republican. My problem is that he is not the person who has been promoted for the last two years,” Bush said.
Although it is unclear which Republican will be the speaker, it is unlikely that the chosen one will be Donalds, who has only served one term in Congress. Right-wing figures also pushed for Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) and other more prominent alternatives.
The congressman noted that while claiming to promote Donalds sincerely, GOP lawmakers talked about his virtues, his background – like Jeffries, the Donalds of New York – and his past struggles.
“It looks like they’re using him as a prop, as a tool, not because they think he’s great, they’ve done all this to lead him,” Bush said. “I don’t like it when they use it that way. I don’t want them to use it like that. And I want them to know: They only use you… don’t let them do it to you. Let them treat you with glory and honor.”
He continued: “To hear Chip Roy stand up and say that it’s not about color … it’s absolutely 100% because if you vote for him for his value and his achievements, I don’t think anyone will be surprised because we will have. see him do the leadership thing.
The congressman dismissed conservative criticism of his remarks.
“I’m glad that they are angry because it shows their lack of knowledge. It shows how stupid they are. I need to read and understand what white supremacy is like, and what the patriarchal system is like,” added Bush.
The Donalds are staunch supporters of Donald Trump, the former president who questioned the citizenship of the country’s first black president, vowed to ban Muslims from entering America’s borders, called COVID-19 the “kung flu,” made Mexican immigrants rapists and often offenders. spurred on white nationalists.
The Donalds supported Trump’s false claim that the 2020 presidential election was invalid, voting to reject state-certified results from Arizona and Pennsylvania. He is close to controversial Florida Governor Ron DeSantis (R) and has opposed gun control and the investigation into the January 6, 2021, riot.
Despite his views that are out of step with most Black voters, Donald has argued that he can help Republicans end the decadeslong failure to attract mainstream Black support. “Black voters are more open to hearing both sides of political arguments for the first time in a long time,” he told Politico last year. “And if Republicans are there to offer policy options to focus on solutions, then you’re going to see more black voters become Republican voters.”
