Police have identified owner of gun linked to Melville shooting



Police are still investigating the New Year’s Eve drive-by shooting in Melville, Johannesburg three years after the incident happened.

The owner of the fire extinguisher, which was found buried in a shallow grave on a farm in Kliprivier in 2020, which was used in the shooting has been identified.

According to the South African Police (Saps) national spokesperson, Athlenda Mathe, the gun was linked to the shooting through ballistic tests.

“Police began a manhunt to track down and trace the owner of the farm. The owner of the farm is known to the police and he has been asked to surrender himself while investigations continue.

“Police will not comment further on this matter as it is an ongoing investigation,” Mathe said SABC News.

In Melville the shooting left two women – Liana Peterson, 41, and Samantha Daniels-Basdew, 27, – dead and several others injured.

At that time, another shooting happened in Mary Fitzgerald Square in Newtown just a few hours later and left 11 injured.

South African actor, Mortimer Williams was one of the victims of the shooting.

Williams, who has starred in several local shows, incl Original Sins, Skeem Saam, Isidingo and 7th Avehas been performing the New Year’s Eve show at Poppy and exchanging wishes with friends who have been spotted from across the room, when they came to the fire.

The actor said The Warga in 2020 he was shot in the kidney and had a bullet in his hip.

There were no arrests

Video footage captures the moment a black BMW SUV plowed into Poppy’s restaurant and set fire to customers.

So far, no arrests have been made in connection with Melville’s shooting.

Police previously arrested five people in Kliprivier in July 2020 and linked them to an international kidnapping and extremism syndicate.

During the arrest, a black BMW SUV was also found as well as a firearm, which has now been linked to the Melville shooting.
