President Akufo-Addo has reaffirmed his belief in building a national cathedral.
“The reason for my decision to encourage support for the construction of the National Cathedral remains unchanged. the interdenominational national cathedral will help unite the Christian community, and thus help promote national unity and social cohesion,” said when he spoke at the Bible reading marathon on the project site.
He emphasized again “It is not just another national monument, but a gathering point for all Christian communities to come together and worship, pray and promote a deep conversation about the role of faith in building mother Ghana”.
The government spent almost GH¢340 million
Executive Director of the National Cathedral Secretariat, Dr. Paul Poku Mensah has stated that the government has so far spent almost GH¢340 million on the construction of the project.
“The total amount paid by the government of Ghana for the project is GHȼ339 million. The amount is made up of the following; the amount paid directly to the secretariat is GHȼ225 million and the amount paid directly to the consultant, Adjaye Associates is GHȼ113m. The two payments total GHȼ339m.
Meanwhile, the President has contributed GHC100,000 for the continuation of the project which has been much discussed, especially after the country’s economic challenges.
