Some roads across the country remained congested on Monday afternoon as travelers returned home.
Talk to The Wargaspokesperson for the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) Simon Zwane said at some point 1088 vehicles pass through the Nyl Tollgate on the N1 south.
“Another busy road is the N3 where 1 832 vehicles pass through the northbound De Hoek tollgate and 1 743 through the northbound Wilge tollgate.

“Still on the N3, Tugela toll gate recorded 1 773 vehicles passing northbound and 1 721 northbound Mooi toll gate,” said Zwane.
While it appears that many motorists are behaving well on the road at this time, Zwane reiterated his concern about the behavior of pedestrians.
“When motorcyclists plan their journey accordingly, it is the issue of running behavior that stands out as the main challenge on the road,” said Zwane.
Over the weekend, the Gauteng Traffic Department (GTD) said it had to deal with incidents of pedestrians drinking in public, walking or crossing the highway.
According to GTD spokesperson Obed Sibasa, the province has recorded many fatal road accidents since the beginning of the celebration.
“More than 100 fatal road accidents have been recorded so far and most of them can be caused by the attitude and behavior of road users such as unsafe overtaking that causes collisions, speeding and pedestrians walking,” said Sibasa.
Meanwhile, more than 3000 people have been arrested on New Year’s Eve for various road traffic violations.
RTMC added that 196 166 traffic fines have been issued, while 3679 vehicles have been impounded.
4 448 drivers were also arrested for various offenses including drunken driving, speeding, reckless and careless driving as well as driving without a license.
