Ghanaian Afro-pop, dancehall, and reggae artist Stonebwoy called on African and Caribbean countries to join together to face common challenges, strengthen historical and cultural ties and build socio-economic and political ties as one region.

According to Stonebwoy, the similarities between the historical and current struggles between the two regions should increase cooperation to strengthen trade and investment and share expertise and knowledge among others.

He made the statement during a panel discussion at the Wood and Watta Business Brunch held in Accra.

The event aims to connect the Future of Africa and the Caribbean on issues including trade, investment, culture, entertainment, and more.

“I have my fair share of criticism and discrimination from Caribbean dancehall acts from Africa like Jamaicans but forget that we are connected.

There is a great need for deeper collaboration to help build ourselves as a united front to conquer the world in all aspects” he said.

“I think that Africans embrace the Caribbean more and the Caribbean can hardly apply an African base in my experience with Jamaicans. And this explains very well why there are no direct flights from Africa to Caribbean countries,” he said.

Jamaica’s first Honorary Consul to Ghana Mr. Isaac Emmil Osei-Bonsu, in his speech, said the African Caribbean must start trading by increasing investment and people-to-people exchanges.

“According to my review 95% of the trade out of the Caribbean goes up north; the USA, Canada, and 5% down the south. Almost nothing comes to Africa. I think this kind of conversation should be expanded by making a decision to restructure the region to exploring a huge opportunity,” he said.

The Deputy Director of Diaspora Affairs, Nadia Musa on her part called on the diaspora to explore opportunities to invest in the Ghanaian economy to support the country’s industrialization drive.

He points out that diaspora investment is essential for industrialization and therefore nation building.

“The Office of Diaspora Affairs calls on the Diaspora to invest in the country’s economy to increase industrialization. We believe that Ghana cannot succeed in her efforts to become an industrialized country without the support and participation of the Diaspora,” he said.

The Wood and Watta Business Brunch organized by Ford Communication and the Diaspora Affairs office is the Afro-Caribbean kick-off event that highlights investment and trade opportunities between the Caribbean and Ghana, from technology to culture and real estate.

The event was hosted by the Managing Director, Ford Communications Lakeshia Ford with selected panelists including Ivie Ani Cultural Journalist, Ms. Leticia Brown Head of Markets, Inclusion, and Advocacy at Zeepay, Sandy Alibo Founder of Surf Ghana, Ray T. Klein Chief Operating Officer, and Benewah Boateng.
