Explosions were heard in Kyiv and air raid sirens wailed across the country after midnight, forcing Ukrainians to abandon New Year’s celebrations and move to bomb shelters.
The latest apparent Russian salvo follows explosions on New Year’s Eve in several parts of Ukraine, with one person killed and 20 reported injured in the capital.
As the sirens sounded in Kyiv in the early minutes of 2023, some people on the balcony chanted “Glory to Ukraine. Glory to the heroes.”
The city’s mayor, Vitali Klitschko, said explosions had been heard and air defenses were working.
He shared a picture on Telegram showing where a rocket fragment hit a car in Kyiv’s Shevchenkivskyi district.

“And that’s the main thing. One wants for all Ukrainians.”
There were reports on social media of people crying over the speech.
In his own address, Vladimir Putin said that 2022 was a year of “difficult but necessary decisions” and “an important step towards the full sovereignty of Russia and the strong consolidation of our society”.

The Russian president backed up earlier statements about the West supporting neo-Nazis in Ukraine who are carrying out “military and open terrorist acts against peaceful civilians in the people’s republic of Donbas”.
He added that “the West lies about peace, but prepares for aggression”.
