Arsenal beat Brighton to go seven points clear

Arsenal moved seven points clear at the top of the Premier League with a thrilling win at Brighton.

This result, allied to Manchester City’s 1-1 draw with Everton, increased Arsenal’s advantage in 2023.

The visitors cruised into a 3-0 lead thanks to goals from Bukayo Saka, Martin Odegaard and Eddie Nketiah before Kaoru Mitoma pulled one back.

Gabriel Martinelli made it four for Arsenal before Evan Ferguson added Brighton’s second with his first league goal.

Mitoma got his second goal to deny the home fans a grandstand as Arsenal grabbed the three points.

Brighton were far behind in the first hour, but after Martinelli restored their three-goal advantage, they showed great spirit to reduce the arrears again through Ferguson.

They then believed they had made it 4-3 with two minutes to go when Mitoma looked to score again, but after a VAR review, the Japanese midfielder was ruled offside.

Arsenal are back in action against Newcastle United on Tuesday, buoyed by a seemingly more formidable lead against champions City with both sides having played 16 games.
