An Obuasi-based NGO, La Vie Foundation has organized a party for the Handicapped, Orphans, widows and residents of some underprivileged communities in Obuasi as a way of showing affection this festive season.
La vie Foundation is a non-profit organization that focuses on empowering the poor, vulnerable and underprivileged groups in society and also restoring hope to the hopeless.
Yvonne Adomako Asabre, Executive Director of La vie Foundation in an interview on the sidelines of the social meeting said the NGO since 2013 has organized the event through the ‘Festival of Hope’ program to show love and care to vulnerable groups in Obuasi and beyond. .
He said the NGO since its formation has reached out to underprivileged communities like Komfokrom in Obuasi Municipality, where they support school children to develop interest in school. illuminate the area.
“10 years ago, we decided to choose a community that does not have a disadvantage like Komfokrom where we encourage school children to develop an interest in school and through that we have already had several children from the community who have graduated high school. the impact we have had for many years -how many years”
The NGO also donated bagged rice, canned tomatoes, biscuits, clothes and some toys to the various groups present at the event.
Request certain negative widow rites to be removed
Culture, he said, is a vehicle for national development. In this sense, it is a panacea and a tool that can be used for the development of the country.
But there are certain negative cultural practices that are considered unfair, and they harm and violate the basic human rights of the people who are victims of these cultural practices.
This, the Executive Director of La vie Foundation, Yvonne Adomako Asabre believes that the indecent cultural practices of being forced to be naked, forced to be confined, not allowed to eat certain types of food and forced to choose a husband from the family of the deceased. to remarry, it must be completely gone.
“Women, during this time they should only be loved and cherished and not subjected to inhuman acts that further destroy the family”.
Rose Abdullah, a widow also expressed her frustration about some of the widows being treated. He said such practices add to the ordeal experienced by widows after losing their husbands.
“I also experienced this when my husband died. In time, you will be told to sleep with your late husband’s sister. Otherwise, the family will ignore you and your children. This is inhumane and must be removed”, he added.
Obeng Dompreh, a physically disabled person praised La vie foundation for the party. He said that the event has only brought hope and confidence back to disabled people who generally feel marginalized.
He asked the Local authorities, as part of the disability fund, to provide a portion to organize gatherings for the disabled during the festive season.
