Two people have been arrested on charges of helping set up a secret police post in New York City on behalf of the Chinese government, a US Justice Department official said Monday.
“New York City is home to the best of New York: the NYPD,” U.S. Attorney Breon Peace, Brooklyn’s top federal prosecutor, said at a news conference announcing the arrests.
“We don’t need or want a secret police station in our great city.”
Officials separately announced charges against more than three dozen members of China’s national police, accusing them of creating and using fake social media accounts to locate and harass dissidents in the United States.
The case is part of a series of Justice Department prosecutions aimed at disrupting the Chinese government’s efforts to target Chinese dissidents, including those who espouse pro-democracy views, and disrupt their speech.
China also faces accusations of operating a secret police station in Canada, which Beijing dismisses as Ottawa’s attempt to tarnish its reputation.
There are at least three Chinese police posts in and around Toronto in predominantly Chinese neighborhoods, according to a report by the human rights group Safeguard Defenders that says they are being used to force some citizens back to China. Now, RCMP say they are investigating whether criminal activity was involved.
